Trout Unlimited to Monitor Rogue River Insect Populations

Bugs help indicate water quality in local rivers and streams.

Rockford, Mich. -- Trout Unlimited (TU) and Michigan Trout Unlimited are will be monitoring insect populations in local streams on  Saturday, April 9,  from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Algoma Township Hall, 10531 Algoma Avenue in Rockford. 

Volunteers will work together to collect insects at stream sites and identify the insects they have collected.  TU volunteers will help determine the quality of a stream site by measuring the insects that are collected. Equipment will be provided and volunteers will get a free lunch.  Children are encouraged to participate.

Stream insects are a good measure of water quality.  Unlike fish, stream insects do not move very far from a given location and are less able to escape the effects of sediment and other pollutants that diminish water quality.
