Community Activities

WE ARE A COMMUNITY THAT LEARNS & HAS FUN TOGETHER – JOIN US!

When you connect with the Western Reserve Chapter at one of our events, you’re stepping into a community that cares about the rivers in our region, brings people together to make a difference and learn new skills, and creates opportunities to have fun with like-minded anglers and conservationists.

Our community events are fun, friendly and low-pressure ways to have fun while doing good, growing your fishing skills and making new friends along the way. Each year we offer:

  • Monthly chapter meetings, often with a guest speaker on a range of conservation and fishing topics
  • Fishing trips and meet-ups on local rivers and streams
  • Fly Fishing Clinics and Cuyahoga River Recreational Trout Stocking
  • Fly Fishing Shows and Events

MONTHLY CHAPTER GATHERINGS

The Western Reserve Chapter comes together on the first Thursday of each month to share fishing stories, meet new people and hear from informational and inspiring speakers on conservation or fishing topics. Meetings alternate between The Hoppin’ Frog Brewery in Akron, OH and The Jenks Building in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Our chapter meetings are open to the public. They are a great way to get introduced to the TU community.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 3rd at 7:00pm at The Hoppin’ Frog, 1680 Waterloo Road, Akron, Ohio 44306

FISHING TRIPS

Getting together on the water is a fantastic way to meet new people, get involved with TU, and learn our waterways. The Western Reserve Chapter occasionally has fishing meet-ups on local rivers in Northeast Ohio, and takes annual trips to Central Pennsylvania.

ODNR Exploring Fly Fishing Classes and Cuyahoga River Stocking

The Western Reserve Chapter hosts an annual fly fishing class through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife’s Exploring Fly Fishing program. For many people, fishing is a gateway to getting involved with conservation. We host the on-the-water portion of this class on the Cuyahoga River, a once badly polluted river that has made an incredible comeback with improvements in water quality standards and dam removals. While the Cuyahoga is as healthy as it has been in a long time, it is still a heavily altered watershed with multiple man-made reservoirs and other anthropogenic infrastructure. As a part of this class, the Western Reserve Chapter purchases and stocks Rainbow Trout in this urban/suburban river to provide a seasonal, recreational trout fishery. While there are no wild or native trout populations within the Western Reserve Chapter’s boundaries, introducing people to fly fishing for trout, even in an urbanized river, may inspire them to get involved with trout conservation in areas where self-sustaining trout populations are in need.
