Trout Unlimited Applauds Sen. Maria Cantwell’s White Salmon River Wild & Scenic Designation Bill

Companion to Rep. Brian Baird’s House Bill H.R. 2397 would protect some 20 miles of the Upper White Salmon River in south-central Washington State’s Gifford Pinchot National Forest

8/7/2003 -- VANCOUVER, WASH --  Representatives of Trout Unlimited’s Washington State Council and its national staff today commended U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell (D - Wash.) for her introduction of legislation to the U.S. Senate to protect approximately 20 miles of the Upper White Salmon River and its tributary, Cascade Creek, under the National Wild and Scenic River System. The White Salmon River flows through the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in south-central Washington, terminating as it enters the Columbia River. It provides habitat for native trout as well as wild steelhead in its lower reaches.
 
  Cantwell’s bill is the Senate companion to Rep. Brian Baird’s (D – Wash.) U.S. House version introduced earlier this year. Already, a nine-mile section of the Lower White Salmon is protected as Wild and Scenic as a result of Congressional designation in 1986.
 
  “Trout Unlimited is proud to support Senator Cantwell and Representative Baird for their leadership in protecting Washington State’s invaluable river resources,” said Ric Abbett, Conservation Coordinator for the Washington Council of Trout Unlimited. “We look forward to seeing the White Salmon legislation through and to using that momentum to continue protecting Washington State’s last, best places.”
